Two games into the post-Derek Jeter era of playoff baseball, the New York Yankees are two games closer to elimination.

Even if the Yankees can dig their way out of an 0-3 hole against Detroit, the team’s starting shortstop, captain — and best hitter this postseason — will miss the remainder of the playoffs with a broken left ankle.

Jeter will undergo surgery on Saturday and is expected to need four to five months to recover, according to the team. That timetable could have him back on the diamond sometime during training camp in .

The 38-year-old suffered the injury when he stumbled while fielding a ground ball in the 12th inning of Game 1 of the ALCS on Saturday. Jeter refused to be carted off the field, and instead hobbled off with the help of the team’s training staff.
