A man fell about 20 feet from the side of an escalator Sunday after the Washington Redskins’ game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.

The 42-year-old fan, whose identity was not disclosed, was airlifted to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was in critical condition. He suffered head injuries when he struck a metal stage, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman told the Associated Press. It was unclear what caused the fall, which occurred at about 4 p.m., shortly after the Giants beat the Redskins.

A hospital spokeswoman told the Star-Ledger that she could not release any information about the fan.

In 2007, eight people were injured at Giants Stadium, which was demolished in 2010torn down after the 2009 season, when an escalator sped up and then stopped suddenly. In August, a Houston Texans fan was killed in a fall from an escalator at a preseason game.
