Fantasy Football Week 10: Brian Hartline, Josh Freeman, Emmanuel Sanders on the rise

November 8, 2012

Josh Freeman has been one of the league’s top quarterbacks since Tampa’s bye week.

The Packers, Redskins, Browns and Cardinals are on the bye this week.

Here are your must-starts and deep threats for Week 10 in the NFL.

Thursday night game

Colts at Jaguars: Colts WR Reggie Wayne

In the middle of a resurgent season, the clear No. 1 target for rookie QB Andrew Luck faces a defense ranked 25th against the pass and giving up nearly 30 points per game over its last five games.

  • Deep threat: Jaguars RB Rashad Jennings – Stop us if you’ve hear this before: the Colts are not good against the run. Jennings hasn’t had a breakout game yet, and this could be the week.

The 1 p.m. games

Bills at Patriots: Patriots RB Stevan Ridley

Ridley had 106 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 4 victory over Buffalo, which surrenders the most fantasy points (26.8) to running backs and is ranked 31st against the run (169.5 ypg).

  • Deep threat: Bills TE Scott Chandler – The last time these two teams met, Chandler had a season-high 62 yards and scored two touchdowns. New England has given up five tight end touchdowns in eight games, so Chandler could find his way into the end zone once again.

Broncos at Panthers: Broncos WR Eric Decker

The Panthers don’t give up many fantasy points to wide receivers, but Decker is on such a roll with at least one touchdown in five consecutive games that he’s a WR1 regardless of matchup.

  • Deep threat: Panthers TE Greg Olsen – G-Reg is just about the only Panther beyond Cam Newton who you know will give you at least a few fantasy points. That’s enough to give him the deep threat distinction again this week.

Chargers at Buccaneers: Bucs QB Josh Freeman

Over his last four games, Freeman has gone from a bye-week replacement to a viable regular starter with 11 touchdowns and one interception while throwing for no fewer than 247 yards.

  • Deep threat: Chargers RB Ronnie Brown – Over the last two weeks Brown has 22 touches, and with Ryan Mathews’ limited involvement in the passing game, the veteran makes an intriguing desperation play.

Falcons at Saints: Falcons RB Michael Turner

The Saints give up the most rushing yards per game (176.5), have allowed nine rushing touchdowns, tied for fourth most, and yield 26.3 fantasy points per game to running backs, the second most behind Buffalo.

  • Deep threat: Saints RB Chris Ivory – The biggest guy in a crowded backfield impressed in his season debut against the Eagles with 48 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. If Darren Sproles is out, Ivory should see a bump usage.

Giants at Bengals: Bengals WR A.J. Green

With a touchdown catch in seven straight games and at last 99 yards receiving in four of six games, Green has become a top three fantasy WR1 and a must-start regardless of matchup.

  • Deep threat: Giants RB Andre Brown – If you’re in a touchdown-dependant league, Brown is becoming increasingly valuable. He continues to get the goal-line work for the G-Men and has now scored in three straight games, making him a decent flex option.

Lions at Vikings: Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph

Vikings Coach Leslie Frazier spoke about getting Rudolph involved again after one of QB Christian Ponder’s favorite targets was held without a catch twice in three games. Rudolph also figures to get more targets with Percy Harvin ailing.

  • Deep threat: Lions WR Titus Young – After he followed up his break-out Week 8 game with a two-catch dud last week, Young needs to prove he deserves the No. 2 receiver spot opposite Calvin Johnson. Fortunately for Young, the Minnesota defense has been less than stellar in recent weeks.

Raiders at Ravens: Ravens WR Torrey Smith

Smith has a touchdown reception in two of his last three games and faces a defense ranked 21st against the pass and allowing nearly 24 fantasy points per game to wide receivers.

  • Deep threat: Raiders RB Marcel Reece – With Darren McFadden likely out and Oakland likely playing from behind, Reece could be in for another big day in the passing game. He turned eight catches into 95 yards and a score last week and would likely split carries with Taiwan Jones.

Brian Hartline has been targeted at least eight times in four straight games. (Darron Cummings / AP)

Titans at Dolphins: Dolphins WR Brian Hartline

Rookie QB Ryan Tannehill’s favorite target faces a defense that has permitted a league-high 20 passing touchdowns and is ranked 27th against the pass, giving up nearly 273 yards per game.

  • Deep threat: Titans WR Nate Washington – In a crowded crop of wide receivers, Washington is establishing himself as the down-field threat. His 15.9 yards per catch average is tops on the team and he has scored in two of his last three games.

The 4 p.m. games

Jets at Seahawks: Seahawks defense

Playing at CenturyLink Field is a daunting prospect to begin with, but the Jets must travel across the country after scoring just nine points last week with an offense that’s ranked 24th in points per game (21).

  • Deep threat: Can we take a pass? No? OK, then we’ll go with WR Jeremy Kerley – New York’s passing game is inconsistent, but Kerley has at least five receptions and 40 yards in three of his last four games. The Jets don’t have much to work with in the way of offense.

Cowboys at Eagles: Eagles defense

The Eagles have limited the Cowboys to 14 or fewer points in each of their last three games. Dallas, meantime, is ranked 26th in points per game (18.8) and probably will be without RB DeMarco Murray again.

  • Deep threat: Cowboys RB Felix Jones – If you watched “Monday Night Football” last week, you saw Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory and even Mark Ingram gash Phiadelphia’s defense. You could do a lot worse than fragile Felix as your flex this week.

Rams at 49ers: 49ers defense

The Rams are 29th in scoring (17.1 ppg) and have combined to score just 20 points in their last two road games while the 49ers have surrendered six points or fewer in four of their last five.

  • Deep threat: Rams WR Danny Amendola – Hey, he’s back! The PPR machine will make his return after missing four weeks to recover from a scary shoulder injury. Don’t count on his usual workload in his first game back, but you never know.

Sunday night game

Texans at Bears: Texans WR Andre Johnson

Johnson has averaged 93 yards and nearly nine catches over his last three games as he’s remained healthy and again become a featured player in one of the league’s more potent offenses.

  • Deep threat: Bears QB Jay Cutler – This call could (and probably will) totally backfire,  but there’s a good chance Chicago gets behind in this game, in which case, they’ll be throwing. If Brandon Marshall keeps beating double teams, Cutler could at least give you a pair of touchdowns (and probably a pair of interceptions, too).

Monday night game

Chiefs at Steelers: Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders

Facing a defense that has given up 17 passing touchdowns, tied for second most in the league, Sanders is a solid flex play if No. 2 WR Antonio Brown is inactive because of a high ankle sprain.

  • Deep threat: Chiefs RB Shaun Draughn – Plain and simple, this offense is wretched. But even with Peyton Hillis back, Draughn is still getting a few touches here and there. Really, there’s no one on KC you’re playing beyond Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe, but if you had to pick a Hail Mary to score a TD, Draughn could be your guy.
