Roethlisberger sprained his sternoclavicular joint when he was sacked and is “in the questionable category” for this week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, Tomlin said. Byron Leftwich, who replaced Roethlisberger in Monday night’s overtime victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, will take snaps with the first-team players, but that doesn’t mean Roethlisberger won’t play. Tomlin pointed out that he’s played Roethlisberger before without him being able to practice during the week. However, ESPN reports that the Steelers are being told to prepare to have Leftwich as the starter.
The sternoclavicular joint is where the collarbone and sternum meet. “Whatever that is,” Tomlin said. “I coach football.”
Tomlin wasn’t about to use the injury to Roethlisberger, or Troy Polamalu, or any other play as an excuse, saying, “We’re not looking to make excuses. Excuses are tools of the incompetent.”
That’s is probably worth writing down somewhere.
