The New York Giants may have crushed the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, but the victory came at a stiff price: running back Andre Brown suffered a broken fibula.

Brown, who leads the Giants with eight touchdowns, was injured after a 16-yard gain in the fourth quarter and will be placed on the injured list/designated for return. It’s a blow for a team that had been using him with Ahmad Bradshaw and now Coach Tom Coughlin turns to rookie David Wilson. “It’s your turn now,” he told Wilson Sunday night. Coughlin admitted that the loss of Brown was deflating, although he may be able to return during postseason.

“Takes an awful lot off of the win, to be honest with you,” he said (via the New York Daily News).

Bradshaw knows full well that he and Wilson must step up now. “I feel bad for Andre; he’s my little brother,” said Bradshaw, who has been dealing with a foot injury. “It’s heartbreaking for me just to see him so down. When I was a rookie I told David, [Derrick] Ward broke his fibula and I had to step in and be a big part of our offense. That’s what I expect from David and I told him to get right and get ready for the following weeks to come.”

Brown had rushed for 385 yards on 73 carries and was injured when his leg was caught on a tackle by M.D. Jennings and Tramon Williams. “It’s going to be a tough loss,” Eli Manning said. “He’s an important player for us. But Ahmad’s been running well, and we’re going to have to get the rookie tuned up and ready to go.”

If the Giants need a boost heading into their Monday night game against the Washington Redskins, maybe they can turn again to Adam Merchant, a 15-year-old fan whose Make-A-Wish desire was to be part of the Giants’ team. On Friday night, he told them (via ESPN’s Dan Graziano) to “play like world champions.” It worked and, even with the loss of Brown, the Giants again look tough. From Graziano:

This is the way they look when they’re at their best and most driven, and it reminds the rest of the league that, if there really does turn out to be a race this year in the NFC East, it’ll only be because the Giants allowed that to happen.

“It reminds us what we’re capable of, and that’s all that matters,” defensive end Justin Tuck said. “Yeah, we slipped a little bit, but we’re refocused now, and hopefully we’re done with the roller coaster and we can just excel.”

They’re the only team in the NFC East capable of doing that at this complete a level, and Sunday brought that reality back home for anyone who’d been wondering.
