Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has found himself at the center of a controversy because he asked for Peyton Manning’s autograph after the Chiefs’ 17-9 loss to the Denver on Sunday.

Charles, whose team had just lost its eighth straight game, was shown waiting for Manning in a postgame report on KCTV. “My mom wanted this autograph,” he said.

Charles rushed for 107 yards on 23 carries. He wasn’t the only member of the Chiefs interested in getting something from Manning, Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe had his picture take with the quarterback. “It’s Peyton Manning,” he said. “Who wouldn’t want a picture with him?”

Bowe, who caught four passes for 41 yards, can become a free agent after the season and was asked if he’d like to play on the same team as Manning. “That, too, but right now the best thing I have is a picture,” he told KCTV.

It wasn’t so much what Charles (and Bowe) did, it was the fact that they were smiling so soon after yet another loss in a dismal Chiefs season. Rich Baldinger, a former Chiefs lineman, said he just didn’t understand it.

“They were smiling and laughing after the loss like that today. I just think it just goes to show what this team’s about,” he told KCTV. “I don’t know if winning’s really that important.”
