Mark Sanchez calls butt fumble “embarrassing”

Let’s just say Thanksgiving 2012 was a day Mark Sanchez would rather forget. (Julio Cortez / AP)

Sorry, Mark Sanchez, but the butt fumble isn’t behind you just yet.

Nothing personal against the New York Jets’ starting quarterback, but his Thanksgiving fumble ranks right up there in the annals of turnovers. The footage of Sanchez carrying the ball on a busted play, running smack into the backside of offensive lineman Brandon Moore and losing to the ball to the New England Patriots (who scored) has been replayed endlessly, much to Sanchez’s chagrin.

“It’s embarrassing,” Sanchez said (via the New York Daily News). “You screw up the play [and] I’m trying to do the right thing. It’s not like I’m trying to force something. I start to slide and I slide in the worst spot I possibly could: right into Brandon Moore.”

Sanchez told reporters that he hasn’t been razzed terribly by his teammates about the play. After all, there was plenty of shared shame after a demoralizing 49-19 loss in which the Patriots scored 35 points in the second quarter, with three touchdowns coming in a 52-second span.

It was the cheek-to-cheek action with Moore, though, that perfectly captured the Jets’ day.

“I guess [I was] more stunned than anything,” Sanchez said. “Like a car accident. I was like, ‘woah – what just happened?’ And then the ball’s gone. It was weird, it [stunk].”
