Michael Vick says this start isn’t an audition

Michael Vick is expected to get the chance to do something he has not done in quite some time: start for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday against the New York Giants.

It would give Vick, sidelined since he suffered a concussion Nov. 11, a chance to remind NFL teams just what he can do. Given that he isn’t likely to be with the Eagles much longer and that a number of NFL teams could use a quarterback (cough, Arizona, cough), that’s probably a good idea. But Vick said he isn’t looking at this opportunity as an audition.

“I’m not going out to audition for a job. I’m going out to try and win. My play and what I’ve done for this league and the accolades that I have speak for themselves,” Vick told USA Today. “The thing I want to do is improve. Whatever happens next year happens. I’m just going to be a guy who, wherever I’m at, I’m going to make the team better.”

On Monday, the Eagles announced that Nick Foles, who had taken the starting job from Vick, would miss the regular-season finale because he had broken a bone in his throwing hand Sunday. Vick was inactive in that game against the Washington Redskins.

“It feels good that I have a chance to play quarterback this last game,” he told Philly.com. “Whether it’s [Coach Andy Reid's] last game or my last game, whoever’s last game it is, it’s the last game of the season [for the 4-11 Eagles] and we want to win it.”

The Eagles can, if nothing else, play spoiler and slam the door on the Giants’ playoff chances. And there’s the chance to send off Reid, who presumably is coaching his final game for the Eagles, with a win.

“I can’t tell you I’m going to be as sharp as I was,” said Vick, who returned to practice Dec. 17. “I’ve really only had one week to work at it. But I’m going to do the best that I can, man, see what comes out of it, have fun doing it.”

Vick, who passes for 2,165 yards in nine games, is due to receive $3 million of his $16 million salary if he is on the roster Feb. 6, but the Eagles can release him before then and owe him none of his 2013 salary.

“A lot of things transpired this year,” he says. “Do I think some things could have been handled differently? Yeah, maybe so. But there’s no use crying over things you have no control over. The most important thing for me is to give everything I got when I step onto the field and not hold any grudge.”
