David Akers struggled last season and nearly lost his job when the San Francisco 49ers brought in Billy Cundiff for a tryout just after New Year’s Day.

Now, Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com reports that the team will release the kicker before the league year begins March 12.

Akers’s base salary for 2013 was to be $3 million.
