Third-seeded Michigan State started its latest NCAA tournament run muddled in an ugly Midwest Region first-round game against Valparaiso, but playing in their home state at the Palace at Auburn Hills, the Spartans eventually woke up.
Tom Izzo’s squad has control at the half with a 17-point lead thanks to a 27-7 run. After hitting just one field goal in the game’s first four minutes, the Spartans are now shooting 41 percent.
Derrick Nix has nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and Keith Appling has seven points, including the three-pointer below. Meantime, the Crusaders still haven’t found their comfort zone, shooting just 25 percent from the field so far.
