What on earth does a coach say just moments before his 24-10 team — a No. 15 seed in the NCAA tournament — to face big, bad Duke, a 27-5 No. 2 seed?
Coach Will Brown, who admitted Thursday that “I got migraines all week watching Duke film,” went his own way, slyly playing the underdog card. Somehow, he found a niche between “we happy few, we band of brothers” and “was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”
“Let’s face it, nobody thinks we’re going to win this game. Nobody,” he said in his pregame speech, “but everybody in this room right here. Let’s take it one possession at a time, one media timeout at a time and let’s surprise everybody.”
As a No. 2 seed, Duke — ahem — lost to a No. 15 seed, Lehigh, last year.
