Russell Westbrook underwent surgery today to repair torn meniscus and will be out the rest of the postseason, the Oklahoma City Thunder announced.
Westbrook, who was injured in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Game 2 victory over the Houston Rockets in their first-round playoff series Wednesday, had the cartilage repaired rather than cleaned up in a procedure done at the Stedman Clinic in Vail, Colo. The difference in recovery time from the two procedures is weeks vs. roughly three months.
“Russell’s health and well being are obviously our number one priority through this process and today’s procedure helped solidify our belief that Russell will have many productive years of basketball in his future,” General Manager Sam Presti said in a statement released by the team. “Although we are of course disappointed that Russell will be unable to return to the floor with his teammates this season, the opportunity to repair the meniscus as opposed to remove it was the best possible scenario for Russell’s long term health as a player and person.”
The Thunder, up 2-0 on Houston, and Kevin Durant will soldier on, albeit in uncharted territory. Westbrook has played in 439 straight games in Oklahoma City. From Newsok.com’s Berry Tramel:
The Thunder doesn’t know life without Westbrook, who never has missed a game. Westbrook played 22 minutes in the first Thunder game ever, back on Oct. 29, 2008, when the starting lineup included the likes of Earl Watson and Johan Petro. And Westbrook has played every game since.
Westbrook is the constant. More so than Durant and Nick Collison, the only players left to make the move from Seattle. More so than Darnell Mayberry and Matt Pinto. More so than Rumble and the Thunder Girls.
Westbrook’s fire and fury, his endless energy, his world-class athletic ability that he harnessed into world-class basketball talent, always has been with the Boomers.
Been a long day ,but want to thank everyone for phone calls, text messages ,and tweets during this tough time. I really appreciate it ..
