Updated with Woods talking about his arm

Tiger Woods admitted that he was feeling pain in his left arm during first-round play Thursday in the U.S. Open, something that was evident in his expression and in the way in which he shook his arm after shots from the rough.

“Pain,” Woods said with a laugh when asked by ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi what he felt during a break between completion of the first round Friday morning and Woods’s 10:44 a.m. tee time for Round 2. “But it is what it is. I’ll move on and get ready for the next round here in a little bit.”

Rinaldi reported that the problem was in Woods’s elbow, but there was no sign of pain on his face as he completed the first round Friday morning.

As for how that first-round, three-over-par 73:

“I missed a boatload of putts. The round could have easily been under par, so that’s good heading into this afternoon.”

Except for that pain thing.

Updated with completion of first round

Tiger Woods returned to the course this morning and completed the first round. He’s at 3-over par 73, along with Rory McIlroy, one of his playing partners. Adam Scott, the other in his group, finished at 2 over.

They are scheduled to begin their second round at 10:44 a.m. The Post’s Barry Svrluga has the full first-round recap here.

What was new, though, was way he winced and shook his left arm and wrist after a couple of shots, particularly from the rough at the fifth and 11th holes. Woods, who was 2 over par through 10 holes when play was suspended, wasn’t divulging any information.

“I’m doing fine,” Woods said later through his spokesman, “and I’m looking forward to getting back out there [Friday].”

Woods doubled over after hitting his second shot from the rough on 11. After his second shot from deeper rough, He dropped his arm to his side and was shaking it. It wasn’t clear whether he was wincing because of pain in his wrist, shoulder or forearm. What is clear is that he will play a lot of golf today. He resumed play shortly after 7 a.m. and was scheduled to begin second-round play with Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott at 10:44 a.m. Play Thursday was suspended at 8:16 p.m.

“It’s going to be a fast night,” Woods said via the USGA.

“It’s kind of the way the tour has been this year. We’ve had a lot of bad weather this year, and this is the way it’s been.

“I’ve got a lot of holes to play [Friday]. And hopefully I can play a little better than I did today.”
