During a WWE live event in South Africa on Tuesday night, a fan jumped into the ring and slugged Randy Orton, one of WWE’s superstars in what the wrestling organization said was a real and not staged attack.
Orton was facing fans in a corner of the ring in the Cape Town event when a man came up behind him and punched him in a sensitive spot. The fan, according to multiple reports, is in police custody. Naturally, there’s fan video of the moment:
WWE, in a statement on its website, wrote that the incident was not staged for publicity:
“WWE.com has learned that Randy Orton was violently attacked by an audience member during a SmackDown World Tour Live Event in Cape Town, South Africa, this evening. Footage of the attack was captured by a WWE fan and posted to YouTube, and shows the perpetrator striking Orton from behind. The matter is currently under investigation by the local authorities, and the South African fan is being held in jail pending criminal charges. The extent of Orton’s injuries are unknown at this time.”
Orton, in the video, appeared no worse for the punch.
