Update: The Giants apologize to Jones, Orioles

The San Francisco Giants were reviewing surveillance footage Monday after Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones claimed that someone threw a banana at him during the ninth inning Sunday at AT&T Park.

Jones made the claim in a tweet Sunday, writing: “I want to thank whatever [expletive] threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jackass.”

Jones, an African-American, had hit a three-run homer off Barry Zito in the top of the ninth, helping the Orioles to a 10-2 win. Jim Moorehead, the Giants’ senior director of media relations, told the Baltimore Sun that the team had received no reports of an incident but would continue to review footage from surveillance cameras today.

Jone’s allegation started a lengthy Twitter conversation, with Jones at one point tweeting: “I love how some ppl are defending the actions by someone today. Shows how u really are also. All good wit me. I just #StayHungry.”

Throwing a banana, a racially-charged gesture. more often occurs in European soccer games these days, although nearly two years ago in the NHL, Wayne Simmonds was the target of a banana-throwing fan.
