A thigh injury is going to sideline Lionel Messi for a while.
Messi will be out two to three weeks, Barcelona announced, after he hurt his leg in the team’s 2-0 victory, in which he had one of the goals, over Almeria on Saturday. “Leo Messi has a small injury to the biceps femoris [thigh] in his right leg,” the team said in a statement (via the BBC).
“This was confirmed by medical tests undertaken by the player on Sunday morning at Medical Services Sport City. The Argentinian will be out for approximately two to three weeks, which will certainly force him to miss Barcelona’s two games this week – on Tuesday against Celtic and next Saturday at the Camp Nou against Valladolid.”
Losing Messi for the game against Celtic, which beat Barcelona in a big Champions League upset last year, is disappointing. And Barcelona will also be missing Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba, both of whom have hamstring injuries, and Carles Puyol, who has had a number of injuries.
Messi also will miss Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Peru.
