A 0-3 start by the Philadelphia Flyers has doomed Peter Laviolette, who was fired today as the team’s coach.

By anyone’s measure, it got late awfully early in Philly, where the 0-3 start matches the team’s record out of the gate last fall. Laviolette was 149-98-29 over parts of five seasons as coach. Both Philly.com and ESPN reported the firing.

Assistant coach Craig Berube is expected to step into the job. Berube, 47, coached the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms for one season before moving to the Flyers. He played in 1,054 games with the Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders.
