Jimmie Johnson widened his lead in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings with a third place finish on Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.

Matt Kenseth, second in the standings, finished 23rd in one of his poorest performances of the season. Kevin Harvick won the AdvoCare 500 for the second consecutive year, but all eyes were on the battle for the Sprint Cup title.

Johnson can claim the top standing by finishing 23rd or better in Sunday’s season finale at Homestead.

“We’re heading into Homestead in the position we want to be in,” Johnson said (via Associated Press.) “I’ll have to go down there and run 400 miles. It’s far from over. You’ve got to finish that race. Although we have a nice cushion, we still have to go down there and take care of business.”

Kenseth, who won the Sprint Cup series 10 years ago, expressed frustration throughout the race and at one point described his car as “just not drivable.”

“I don’t even know what to tell you to fix, to be honest,” Kenseth radioed (via Associated Press.) “I am so aero tight. So aero tight.”

The season finale will be held at the Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida.

Johnson, Kenseth and Harvick are the only three drivers with a chance to win the championship. Kyle Busch (fourth in the standings) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (fifth) were among those eliminated at Phoenix.
