Tom Daley, one of the most famous athletes in Great Britain and a bronze medalist in diving in the London Olympics, announced Monday in an emotional YouTube video that he is in a relationship with a man.
Daley, 19, chose YouTube to offer clarity without defining terms, saying that “I still fancy girls” in the five-minute video that was viewed over 600,000 times in the first few hours since it was posted.
“…[T]his year, my life changed. Massively. When I met someone and it made me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great. That someone is a guy,” Daley said. “And it did take me by surprise a little bit. It was always in the back of my head that it could happen, but it wasn’t until the spring of this year that something clicked. It felt right. Like I said, my whole world just changed right there and then.”
Daley also tweeted the video to his nearly 2 1/2 million followers. “Of course I still fancy girls,” he says. “But I mean, right now I’m dating a guy and I couldn’t be happier. It makes me feel safe and just really does feel right.”
Daley had denied rumors about his sexual preference in an interview in September. “I think it’s funny when people say I’m gay… I laugh it off… I’m not,” he told the Mirror. “But even if I was, I wouldn’t be ashamed. It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest what people thought.”
“I’m still Tom,” he said in the video. “I still want to win an Olympic gold medal in Rio 2016 for Great Britain. I’m still motivated as ever to do that.”
