Thomas Morgenstern, the three-time Olympic ski jump champion from Austria, was hospitalized Friday after a horrific crash during training for a ski flying World Cup in Tauplitz, Austria, this weekend.

As he flew into the air, Morgenstern lost his balance, flipped and flailed, landing on his back and head. He was briefly unconscious, according to the Austria Press Agency report, but was speaking afterward. The Salzburg hospital to which he was taken has not updated his condition.

“Fortunately he was responsive, Thomas can move arms and legs,” team physician Herbert Leitner said (via the Associated Press). “That’s very important. He asked me what happened.”

This is the second crash for Morgenstern, 27, recently. He suffered a broken little finger, cuts, bruises and abrasions in a crash last month after a World Cup jump. Morgenstern won two gold medals at Turin in 2006 and another at Vancouver in 2010.
