Contrary to how it may have looked to the casual observer of Fox Sports on Sunday afternoon, Jimmie Johnson did not win the Daytona 500. That was last year. Sooo last year.
This year’s race was delayed after 38 laps because of storms that ripped through the Daytona Beach, Fla., area and was scheduled to restart at around 8 p.m. EST. Johnson, like all the other drivers, was in his trailer waiting out the delay when he started getting texts and tweets of congratulations from people who were watching Fox, which was showing a rerun of last year’s race. Never mind the disclaimer at the bottom of the screen.
He took a bit of kidding from Clint Bowyer and Deadspin’s headline noted that “Scores of Idiots Don’t Realize Fox Is Airing Last Year’s Daytona 500.”
Wait a minute! I’m confused, did @JimmieJohnson win or not?— Clint Bowyer (@ClintBowyer) February 23, 2014
This could have been avoided if Fox had gone with the universally-recognized sign of a broadcast in a rain delay: “M*A*S*H” reruns.
