Russian Olympic skicross racer Maria Komissarova, who suffered a horrific crash at the Sochi Olympics, is confident that she will walk again despite not being able to feel the lower half of her body.
“I don’t feel my body below my navel. But I am strong and I know that I’ll be able to stand on my legs again some day.”
The 23-year-old Komissarova underwent a 6½-hour operation on Feb. 15 at a Sochi hospital after fracturing her 12th dorsal vertebrae in her lower-middle back during a training run.
Following a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin after the surgery, a decision was made to fly her to Munich for further treatment.
Komissarova will remain in the Munich rehabilitation center for at least three months, a spokesman for the Russian freestyle ski federation told the Interfax news agency.
