After a three-year hiatus, Steve Fischer and San Diego State are back in the Sweet 16.

The Aztecs rode the hot hand of Mountain West player of the year Xavier Thames, who finished with a game-high 30 points to a 63-44 win over No. 12 North Dakota State. Thames’s 30 is most points scored by one player in Saturday’s second-round play.

After allowing 69 points to New Mexico State, the Aztecs put the clamps on the Bison, holding one of the nation’s most accurate teams to 31 percent shooting. Bison guard Kory Brown scored a team-high 13 points, but was the only North Dakota State player to score in double figures.

Bison kid, you will be missed.
