Some quick-thinking helped save a soccer player’s life during a Ukrainian Premier League match on Sunday.
Dynamo Kiev’s Oleh Husyev was accidentally kneed in the face by Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk’s goalkeeper, Denys Boyko, and was knocked unconscious.
Instead of continuing play, Dnipro midfielder Jaba Kanakava immediately rushed to the aid of his opponent, flipping Husyev on his side and sticking his fingers in Husyev’s throat to clear air for him to breathe.
Other players and medical staff soon joined in on the effort, and Husyev managed to regain consciousness before being taken away on a stretcher and sent to a nearby hospital.
“He sustained medium concussion, several bruises and a bruised jaw,” Dynamo team doctor Leonid Myronov said of Husyev (via The Guardian). “He is lucky to have such light injuries. His spine, skull and bones are all intact – no breaks or fractures.”
Dnipro won the match, 2-0, to land in second place in the Ukrainian Premier League, but all thoughts were on the well-being of Husyev.
“Football is just a game,” Dynamo wrote on its Web site. “Human life is above all and the episode when Oleh Husiev suffered a severe injury proves that. We wish the White-Blues skipper recover as quickly as possible.”
