San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick responded to news Thursday that he and two other NFL players were under investigation by Miami police for an alleged incident that occurred earlier this month.
Kaepernick, on Twitter, questioned the veracity of the accuser and added, “I assure you that your faith is not misplaced.”
(1/3) The charges made in the TMZ story and other stories I’ve seen are completely wrong. They make things up about me that never happened.— Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) April 11, 2014
(2/3) I take great pride in who I am and what I do, but I guess sometimes you have to deal with someone who makes things up.— Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) April 11, 2014
(3/3) I want to thank all of the people who have shared their encouraging sentiments. I assure you that your faith is not misplaced.— Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) April 11, 2014
TMZ initially reported that Kaepernick, along with 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton and Seattle Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette, were under investigation for an alleged sexual assault, but the Miami Police Department said that it was looking into a “suspicious incident,” not a sexual assault. The Miami police report, obtained by the Sacramento Bee, states that the incident occurred April 1 when a woman went to the Miami apartment of Lockette, who formerly played in San Francisco and is a close friend of Kaepernick’s. No arrests or charges are pending. “Definitely not,” Miami Police Department public information officer Rene Pimental told USA Today. “There is an investigation regarding an allegation.”
According to the police report, both the quarterback and Patton were at the apartment and the woman served drinks and served shots. The woman, the police report states, was told “to ‘hit’ the bong which contained marijuana.” When she felt light-headed, she was joined by Kaepernick, with whom she had a past sexual relationship. “Mr. Kaepernick came behind her into the bedroom and started kissing her,” the report states. “Mr. Kaepernick started to undress her. She got completely naked. Mr. Kaepernick told her that he was going to be right back and left the bedroom. They did not have sex.”
Patton and Lockette then looked into the room and the alleged victim said: “What are you doing? Where is Colin? Get out.”
According to the police report, the alleged victim said she remembers nothing after that and awoke in a hospital bed. She reported the incident to police April 3.
“The 49ers organization is aware of the recent media report regarding Colin Kaepernick and is in the process of gathering the pertinent facts,” 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said Thursday in a statement.
