Saturday proved to be the day of lopsided fights. First, there was that awful heavyweight title boxing match between Ukrainian giant Wladimir Klitschko and human punching bag Alex Leapai, and then there was a battle for the UFC light heavyweight title between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira.
Although far from boring (in fact, the entire UFC 172 card was action-packed), the bout was painful to watch. It suffices to say, Teixeira is going to need a lot of stitches. Jones won’t. Jones ended up outscoring the challenger 50-45 and was awarded the win in five rounds by unanimous decision. This viewer summed the action up pretty well:
Teixeira is being bullied with elbows, uppercuts, oblique kicks, kitchen sink, washer, dryer, riding mower, tool box… #UFC172— #Dizz-Approved (@TalkMMA) April 27, 2014
Which may be why just minutes after UFC 172 ended UFC president Dana White announced Jones’s next opponent at a press conference. Jones will face Alexander Gustafsson, the man who put up a fight so hard last year that it sent Jones to the hospital. Alas, Gustafsson barely missed out on the title, so he’s hungry, no doubt. So are the fans.
