Russell Wilson gear tops Peyton Manning swag in sales

Russell Wilson, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks, was the most lucrative name in NFL gear in the last fiscal year, according to NFL Players Inc. Wilson ranked No. 1 in the list of 50 players, moving up 18 spots from his position in the previous fiscal year. NFLPI measures its fiscal years from March 1 until the last day in February.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, meanwhile, fell to the No. 2 spot, which still means he made Scrooge-McDuck levels of cash because, in total,  NFLPI licenses generated more than $1 billion last year, the statement says.

Interestingly, nine of the top 10 players on the list are quarterbacks. The San Francisco 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick, the Washington Redskins’ Robert Griffin III, the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers and the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady ranked third through sixth, respectively. And the New York Giants’ Eli Manning, the Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck and the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees ranked eighth through tenth, respectively.

Breaking up the QB pack at No. 7 is Seattle Seahawks’ running back Marshawn Lynch. He probably could’ve made it to No. 1 had the NFLPI licensed his name to Skittles. Maybe next year.
