His opponent feels he was robbed and the performance wasn’t the strongest of his career, but Floyd Mayweather Jr. remained undefeated, beating Marcos Maidana by majority decision Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Still, a tweet from The Champ stole the show.
“I feel I was robbed,” Maidana said through a translator (via the Los Angeles Times) after two judges ruled 117-114 and 116-112 in favor of Mayweather and the third scored the fight 114-114. “I feel I won.”
Mayweather, 46-0 with 26 knockouts, found the 12-to-1 underdog gave him all he could handle.
“This was a tough, competitive fight. This is what fans want to see,” said Mayweather after Maidana landed more more punches than any opponent in 38 fights tracked by CompuBox. “I want to give fans an exciting fight. Normally, I box and move. Tonight, I gave fans an exciting fight.”
The close result didn’t keep people from agitating for the fight everyone wants to see: Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. That crowd included The Greatest, whose verified account states that all tweets with #AliTweet come from Ali himself.
