Three TPC Sawgrass greens still in trouble ahead of the Players Championship

It’s not easy being green — especially being green at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. This year’s long, harsh winter beat up the greens where the Players Championship will be played this week, The Florida Times-Union reports. And even worse, a chemical application that was supposed to heal the seasonal damage actually made it worse, which players were notified about on Sunday night via a text message. It said:

“The fourth, 11th and 12th greens will remain closed to all practice … Please do not hit shots to these greens. Players and caddies should not walk on these greens until further notice. Thanks for your cooperation.”

Garry Smits, who covers golf for The Florida Times-Union, is really weary of the greens, which looks like a Settlers of Catan board.

Players are also disappointed, but not defeated. GolfWeek.com reports:

“[One player who lives in Florida] offered a reminder that this won’t be the first time a tournament has been held on greens that were below regular PGA Tour standards, and he nodded over his shoulder toward the Quail Hollow Club. Sure enough, just last year the greens at the Wells Fargo Championship were in rough shape, but the show went on, just as it did at East Lake GC in Atlanta during the 2007 Tour Championship.”

Officials are optimistic that the greens will become playable by Thursday, though, if the upcoming weather forecast holds, GolfWeek.com reports. It calls for 80-to-90-degree temperatures with no chance of rain.
