Dale Earnhardt Jr. races Charles Barkley, says he isn’t ‘turrible’

Forget California Chrome and his quest to win the Triple Crown on June 7, the real race takes place the next day.

That’s when a showdown between Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Charles Barkley will be shown. The two went head-to-head Friday in a race that will be shown on TNT’s Summer Series before the June 8 NASCAR race at Pocono. Neither driver was giving anything away, but they were blabbing about it on Twitter.

“I was really surprised how nice a guy he was,” Earnhardt said (via the Associated Press). “I really expected him to be a competitor. As a player, he was really fiery and aggressive, getting into scuffles. He was super nice. Really has an appreciation for our sport. Just a real nice guy to be around.”

Sadly, these were just go-karts.

During a TNT broadcast after the Charlotte Bobcats were eliminated, Earnhardt’s name was mentioned and Barkley riffed that he’d always wanted to meet Junior. That prompted Junior to tweet, “Heck, I wanna meet Charles!” The race should be fun, but we really want to see these two guys play golf together.
