For the first time since he fractured his leg in a sprint car crash last summer, Tony Stewart hopped back into a sprint car Monday and went for a drive.

He tweeted a half-dozen pictures of the event with “#smokewillrise.”

“This was a huge day for me,” he tweeted. “9 1/2 months since I’ve been in one.”

Most NASCAR drivers who started out racing on dirt tracks love sprint cars and Stewart’s passion was undiminished by a crash in which he broke his right leg badly. Stewart, who missed the rest of the NASCAR season and finished 13th in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, still hasn’t recovered completely from the injury that required three operations. He walks with a limp and estimates that his recovery won’t be complete for months. His spin in a sprint car was “only a private test,” according to Eddie Jarvis, Stewart’s business manager.

Still, it looked like fun.
