The 146th running of the Belmont Stakes takes place Saturday, where the attention will be on whether California Chrome can become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed accomplished the feat in 1978.
California Chrome, with his controversial and fashionable nasal strips, enters as a 3-5 favorite after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but faces his toughest task in the 1 1/2 mile race.
As further proof of how difficult the Triple Crown is, since 1978 there have been 11 horses that have captured the first two races only to leave New York without the win (Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another was scratched from the Belmont in 2012 because of any injury).
