Rickie Fowler honored his hero, the late Payne Stewart, in the best way possible Thursday.

He wore knickers and argyle socks for his opening round at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

Stewart, who beat Phil Mickelson in the 1999 U.S. Open on the same course, died in a plane crash months later. He is memorialized in a statue at the 18th green of the golf course.

“I’ve really been looking forward to wearing this outfit,” Fowler told the Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis. “It’s been hard to keep a secret. Payne Stewart was on of my idols.”

Fowler plans to return to his own brand of outrageous golfwear on Friday.
