In the first big move in this summer’s NBA free-agent market, New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony is expected to file notice with the team on Monday that he will exercise the early-termination option on his contract.
The move, which was expected and first reported by Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski, means that Anthony will be a free agent on July 1. He faced a Monday deadline for opting out of his $23.5 million contract for next season.
Among teams interested in Anthony, 30, are the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets. Although Knicks President Phil Jackson had hoped that Anthony would remain in New York for the final year of his contract, Anthony apparently believes other teams offer the chance to be part of a winner more quickly.
