Maria Sharapova will not be celebrating the 10th anniversary of her only Wimbledon title with a second.
Angelique Kerber, the ninth seed from Germany, converted her seventh match point on Centre Court and beat Sharapova 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-4.
Kerber will play Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in the next round. Sharapova, the fifth seed, has advanced to the quarterfinals just once in her last nine trips to Wimbledon.
