Bar owner says Titans rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger punched by Alabama fan

Titans Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt, right, has four quarterbacks on the roster – one of which was reportedly sucker punched by an Alabama fan over the weekend.

Former LSU quarterback and Tennessee Titans rookie Zach Mettenberger was reportedly sucker punched at a bar over the weekend by an Alabama fan whose friend yelled ‘Roll Tide!’

Steve Ford, the owner of Losers Most Wanted Bar and Grill in Nashville told the Tennessean that Mettenberger, the Titans’ sixth-round draft pick in May, did nothing to provoke the punch and did not require medical attention.

“Here’s the truth: The guy said something about ‘Roll Tide!’ to Zach, and Zach turned around and said ‘Good luck with that,’” Ford said on Monday. “And the guy’s buddy then sucker-punched Zach.

“I promise you that Mettenberger did not throw a punch. He didn’t do anything. The guy sucker-punched him in the eye, that’s the bottom line, and the guy that punched him started running out the door. My door guys had to chase him down.”

Mettenberger, 23, played in five games for the Tigers in the 2011 season before taking over as starter in 2012. LSU knocked off Alabama in the 2011 regular season but has lost to the Crimson Tide in the last three meetings, including the 2012 BCS National Championship game.

Mettenberger, the No. 178 pick in this year’s draft who is battling for the No. 3 quarterback spot with the Titans, is not pressing charges according to Ford.

“It is what it is and it’s over. No one is pressing charges,” Ford said. “It shouldn’t have happened to begin with. The guy said ‘Roll Tide.’ He tried to provoke him. But Zach did not throw one punch, period. I was standing right next to him.”
