Manchester United appears to have edged ahead of Barcelona in the bidding to land one of the heroes of Germany’s World Cup-winning team.

Mats Hummels is expected to leave Borussia Dortmund for Old Trafford in a $28 million deal, according to the Spanish newspaper Sport. During World Cup play in Brazil, Hummels scored twice, including the only goal in Germany’s victory over France in a quarterfinal. United, under new Coach Louis van Gaal, has been eager to sign a new center-back after the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

Hummels, 25, would bring youth and star power to van Gaal’s team.
