Not long after sending Jon Lester to the Oakland A’s, the Boston Red Sox traded John Lackey, another pitching cornerstone of their World Series team to the St. Louis Cardinals for oufielder Allen Craig and pitcher Joe Kelly.

The move has long-range implications for the Red Sox, who are last in the American League East Division, and more immediate ones for the Cardinals, who are fighting for a wild-card berth. It comes just a few hours before the 4 p.m. EDT non-waiver trade deadline.

In Lackey, 35, the Cardinals get a pitcher who beat them twice in the 2013 World Series. With Michael Wacha still ailing, Lackey and Justin Masterson, whom the Cards acquired earlier this week, will boost the rotation. As for the Red Sox, pre-deadline move traditionally are a fire sale, but General Manager Ben Cherington is getting high marks…so far.
