Eight-time PGA Tour winner Dustin Johnson shocked the golf world when he announced he would be taking a break from golf “to seek professional help for personal challenges” on Thursday, effective immediately. Much of the Twitterverse assumed drugs were to blame for his mysterious midseason leave, and now it looks like they were right. Golf.com writes:
“According to [a] source, Johnson has failed three drug tests: one for marijuana in 2009 and two for cocaine, in 2012 and 2014. He was previously suspended for the 2012 failed test, but that suspension was never made public. Under the PGA Tour’s drug-testing policies, the Tour is not required to announce any disciplinary actions against players who test positive for recreational drugs.”
Over the years, Johnson has earned a rather scandalous reputation among his peers and golf fans for his bad behavior off the course, which Golf.com writes not only involves substance abuse but also “sexual indiscretion with at least one wife of a PGA Tour player.”
Some link the exasperation of Johnson’s unscrupulous behavior to his fiancee Paulina Gretzky, who is technically a model and an actress, but is better known for being Wayne Gretzky’s daughter and for her hard-partying behavior and revealing Instagram photos. Here’s a tame photo of the couple from Gretzky’s Instagram.
Ultimately, it’s not Gretzky but Johnson who is responsible for any cocaine he snorted, which is now reportedly causing him to miss the rest of the season, including next week’s PGA Championship and his spot on the Ryder Cup team.
Neither Johnson nor his reps have replied to any of the drug-suspension revelations.
