Pocono? For Dale Earnhardt Jr., it’s more like Poco-Yes! (Thank you, I’ll see myself out now.)
Junior’s win today at Pocono Raceway gave him a sweep of the two Sprint Cup races held at the track this season, and he made sure to brandish a broom in celebration. Earnhardt pretty much had to, after calling for just such a scenario on Friday:
Landed in Pocono. Lookin for a broom.

Earnhardt accomplished the first sweep at Pocono since Denny Hamlin in 2006. Combined with his Daytona 500 win, Junior has as many first-place finishes in Sprint Cup events this year as he did from 2006 through 2013. The far-and-away most popular driver in NASCAR also has the top seed in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
The only potential down note for Earnhardt these days is that the crew chief masterminding his huge success, Steve Letarte, is leaving Hendrick Motorsports after this season to take a job as an NBC Sports analyst. However, Junior has expressed happiness with the choice of Greg Ives as Letarte’s replacement; Ives was race engineer on Jimmie Johnson’s team when that driver ripped off five straight Sprint Cup championships from 2006 to 2010.
Earnhardt has never won an overall Sprint Cup title. His best finish was third, in 2003.
