The NHL announced Wednesday that the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings will play an outdoor hockey game at Levi’s Stadium, the brand-new home of the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, Calif., on Feb. 21 at 10 p.m. EST as part of the NHL Stadium Series
“The growing excitement around NHL hockey in California hockey, the intensity of last season’s playoff series between these teams and the state-of-the-art setting at Levi’s Stadium will bring a thrilling new dimension to the Kings-Sharks rivalry,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “We thank the Sharks, the Kings, Coors Light, the San Francisco 49ers, Levi’s Stadium and everyone involved in producing the next episode of our Coors Light NHL Stadium Series.”
It will be the first outdoor game for the Sharks. The Kings played at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25, losing 3-0 to the Anaheim Ducks. The temperature when the puck dropped was 63 degrees, the warmest-ever outdoor NHL game. The average high temperature in Santa Clara on Jan. 25 is also 63 degrees, though the game will be played at night so the temperature almost certainly will be cooler than that.
Hopefully they’ll have the kinks worked out at Levi’s Stadium by then. On Saturday night, there were a number of glitches when the San Jose Earthquakes and the Seattle Sounders played in the first sporting event held at the stadium. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the much-heralded Wi-Fi was balky, vendors ran out of food, the bathroom lines were long and fans reported a chaotic scene while trying to leave the game via car or train.
The 49ers play their first preseason game there on Aug. 17.
In June, the NHL announced that the Washington Capitals will host the Chicago Blackhawks in the annual Winter Classic outdoor game, most likely at Nationals Park.
