It turns out reality might actually be stranger than mid-1990s fiction.
Remember that “Seinfeld” episode where Elaine was told not to wear a Baltimore Orioles cap to a Yankees game while sitting in the owner’s box? (Elaine did anyway and it did not work out for her…) Well, substitute supermodel Kate Upton for Elaine, the Detroit Tigers for the Orioles and the “Legends section” for owner’s box, and it looks like we’ve got ourselves a sitcom story line come to life. Upton described the bizarre on Friday while guest-co-hosting “Live with Kelly and Michael.” The conversation begins around the 2-minute 40-second mark.
“The Yankees told me, ‘You’re not allowed to wear a Tigers hat. You’re not allowed to wear any Tigers gear,” Upton said while talking to co-host Michael Strahan about the game she attended at Yankees Stadium on Aug. 6. Her boyfriend, the Tigers’ Justin Verlander, was the starting pitcher that night.
Unlike Elaine, however, Upton followed the instructions and ditched her Tigers hat, but not without feeling weird about it.
“It’s like a bad breakup,” Upton, who grew up a Yankees fan, said. “I’m sleeping with the enemy!”
Upton chose not to wear any team’s gear at all in the stands, although Verlander may have benefited from his 22-year-old girlfriend had she worn a … Yankees cap? Yes, she explains Strahan:
“He actually told me ‘I like to be angry before I pitch.’ He didn’t tell me before, so he’d seem like he was in a bad mood before he pitched, so I’d be like joke, joke, joke, joke, joke, trying to cheer him up. And then he got mad at me, he was like, ‘Stop making me laugh, I’m trying to be angry.’ I went straight to wearing a Yankees cap.”
The Tigers lost 5-1.
Verlander’s less-than-stellar game didn’t stop the couple, who met in 2012 on the set of a commercial for MLB 2K12, from having fun. At one point, the pitcher even tossed Upton a baseball over the dugout in a gesture that had the whole Internet squeeing at the couple’s cuteness.
