UFC officials rescheduled the fight that was to take place on Sept. 27 to Jan. 3 after Jones, according to MMAFighting.com, suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee and a sprained ankle during training on Monday. While the injury is serious enough to warrant the several-month delay, it is unknown whether Jones will need surgery.
Of course, with their history of trash-talking, Cormier took the opportunity to sneak a verbal jab in on Jones after learning of the delay. He told MMAFighting.com:
“It’s very disappointing. I started to train very hard. It’s a little discouraging, but now I have time to get completely healthy. I don’t know how hurt Jon is but we have to remember that I took this fight with a pre-existing [knee] injury. I could have fought through it, I just wish he would have done the same.”
In place of Jones and Cormier, flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and Chris Cariaso are now the main event.
