After Manchester United’s underwhelming performance against Swansea City to open the season, it was a safe bet that changes were in store. They wasted no time.
Although it’s not a name that has driven traffic to transfer rumor Web sites, Rojo will provide United manager Louis van Gaal with more lineup flexibility, allowing him to continue with his 3-5-2 formation.
Van Gaal commented on the signing on the team’s Web site:
“Marcos is a very gifted defender. He has played at the highest level in world football and can play either as a central defender or left-back.”
“He has ability, physical strength and a willingness to learn that means he has a very bright future ahead of him. He had a very strong World Cup and has been playing in Europe for a couple of years now. He is a very good addition to the team.”
The 24-year-old Argentinian should bolster a defense that looked shaky last season. The Guardian reported that United will send Portuguese winger Nani to Sporting Lisbon on year-long loan as part of the deal.
Rojo seems excited to join the team, telling the Argentinian radio station, Continental:
“It’s a dream to play at Manchester United and I am very proud of having the chance of working with [Louis] van Gaal. I spoke with Juan Sebastián Verón about Manchester United when we were at Estudiantes. I have always liked English football, and I should adapt to this new playing style easily.”
Let’s see how he feels once he encounters the British tabloids.
