New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham fined $30,000 for ‘dunking’ over goal post

It turns out celebrating in the end zone by “dunking” the ball over the goal post costs more in fines than flipping off the opposing team. While the Cleveland Browns’ Johnny Manziel reportedly got slapped with a $12,000 fine for his middle finger stunt, New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham got stuck with $30,000 in fines for two dunks he performed during the team’s preseason game last week against the Tennessee Titans, ESPN reports.

“It’s unfortunate because I just love the game. I have a lot of passion for the game. And when I go out there on Sunday, it’s fun for me,” Graham told ESPN. “And I feel like a little kid out there, and sometimes I act like it.”

The “dunk” was only recently put on the NFL’s no-can-do list, with the biggest complaint about it stemming from the fact that a player can actually move the goal post if they hit it the wrong way with their hand or ball while jumping up. Incidentally, Graham did this last season while performing the touchdown trick in Atlanta, NBC Sports reports.

Graham’s fine would’ve likely been a lot less had he listened to Saints Coach Sean Payton and kept his cool in the end zone and followed the rules. The league generally fines players $11,025 for one unsportsmantlike offense, but that fee doubles on the second, NBC Sports reports.

“I’m very upset. Would you be upset? I was, particularly,” Coach Payton told The Advocate, referring to Graham’s antics. His immature end zone behavior earned the team two of its 22 total fouls the night of their 31-24 win over the Titans.

“It is the first sign of a team that has no discipline and the first sign of poor coaching,” Payton added.
