Ordinarily, an athlete be nervous with his boyhood idol watching him play. Especially now that the idol is sort of his boss.
But Roger Federer was unfazed, winning his first-round U.S. Open match in straight sets and wearing new personally branded, hybrid Air Jordan 3 shoes. Federer won, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (6-4) and all Marinko Matosevic could do was participate in the show.
“I want to be like Mike!” he yelled, pointing to Jordan.
It was solidly entertaining and a good excuse to promote the shoe, a collaborative effort that, in a happy coincidence, is now on sale online.
“I know nothing about tennis,” Jordan admitted in an ESPN interview. “He’s a good athlete. I know he played basketball a bit.”
He even got to see Federer, who’d proudly posted a selfie with his new bestie on Monday, display a little razzle-dazzle with a between-the-legs shot.
“It’s just amazing having Michael here,” Federer said afterward. “Growing up he was my big sporting idol. … Having him here is unbelievably special, and the collaboration is unique, so I love it.”
