Patriots trade Ryan Mallett to Houston Texans

No sooner did Bill Belichick say that he was “fortunate” to have three quarterbacks on the roster than the New England Patriots coach traded one of them.

Ryan Mallett is headed to the Houston Texans, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2016. He’ll join former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, now the Texans’ coach, in Houston. As for the Patriots, Jimmy Garoppolo is the backup to Tom Brady.

The Patriots also had been talking with the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills about Mallett, the Boston Herald reports.
