On this opening day of the 2014-15 NFL regular season, former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly got the best news of all — his doctors declared him cancer free following a series of post-treatment biopsies that all came back negative, ESPN reports.

“This is some of the greatest news I’ve ever gotten,” Kelly said in a statement (via BuffaloBills.com). “It’s been a long road, and I’m still not back to 100 percent, but I have a lot to be thankful for.”

Kelly was first diagnosed with oral cancer in March 2013. He underwent surgery to remove tumors, but the cancer returned in March of this year. Following another round of radiation and chemotherapy, Kelly’s doctors at Lenox Hill Hospital announced two weeks ago that they found “no evidence” of cancer remaining in his jaw. However, the doctors paused before declaring Kelly cancer free to conduct biopsies. That latest round of tests were enough for Kelly’s doctors to declare the 54-year-old officially cancer free.

“I am so thankful for the support and prayers of my family, my friends near and far, and everyone in Western New York and throughout the country through my illness. I also want to thank the medical specialists who have done such amazing work,” Kelly said in the statement (via ESPN). “Most of all, I want to thank God. Without my faith and God’s constant presence, there would be no such thing as ‘Kelly Tough.’ ”

Obviously, Kelly’s family is excited about the news. Wanting to share that enthusiasm with the world, Kelly’s wife Jill uploaded video of her husband informing their daughter Erin Marie that he’s now officially free of cancer.

Kelly’s friends, former teammates and fans have also expressed their enthusiasm upon hearing the good news.
