Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain moved into damage control mode over his muddied response Wednesday to a question on abortion. Cain, facing criticism for saying he didn’t see his pro-life opinion as a national directive tweeted Thursday: I’m 100% pro-life. End of story.

If only it were that simple.

Rick Santorum, campaigning Thursday in New Hampshire, slammed Cain in a statement saying that “you cannot be both personally against abortion while condoning it - you can’t have it both ways.

“Herman Cain said that he believes life begins at conception, but that it’s up to the individual to decide whether or not to terminate that life,” Santorum said. “And I find it gravely troubling that Herman believes it’s a life, but that he doesn’t consider it a life worth fighting for.”

Santorum has staked out a hardline stance on abortion, arguing that it should be banned and that doctors who perform the procedure should face criminal charges.

Cain seemed to strike a pro-choice stance in an interview that aired Wednesday night on Piers Morgan, when asked about abortion in the case of rape or incest.

Here's what he said:

“It comes down to, it’s not the government’s role or anybody’s role to make that decision. Secondly, if you look at the statistical incidents, you’re not talking about that number. What I’m saying is it ultimately gets down to a choice that the family or that mother has to make. Not me as president, not some politician, not a bureaucrat. It gets down to that family. And whatever they decide. I shouldn’t have to tell them what decision to make for such a sensitive issue.”
