Let the VP auditions begin.

Rob Portman will stump for Mitt Romney in Pennsylvania on Thursday, two days after the former Massachusetts governor’s closest rival in the presidential race, former senator Rick Santorum, announced that he was suspending his bid for the nomination.
Portman, a rising GOP star who served as director of the Office of Management and Budget during the administration of former President George W. Bush, will address the Westmoreland County GOP in Greensburg at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, according to Romney’s campaign.
The appearance isn’t the first time that Portman has hit the trail for Romney. Last month, Portman campaigned with Romney throughout Ohio ahead of the Buckeye State’s presidential primary.
Portman is one of several top Republicans whose names have been floated as potential running mates for Romney; our colleagues at The Fix last month ranked him No. 3 among Romney’s potential veep choices, behind Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R).
McDonnell hit the airwaves on Romney’s behalf earlier Wednesday in a round of TV interviews, and Rubio has been outspoken in defending Romney since announcing his support for the former Massachusetts governor late last month.
